Ang tunay na mga owk o tipikal na mga kuwago (pamilya Strigidae) ay isa sa dalawang karaniwang tinatanggap na mga pamilya ng mga kuwago, at ang iba pa ay ang mga bahaw (Tytonidae). Ang Sibley-Ahlquist taksonomiya ay nagkakaisa sa Caprimulgiformes na may owl orden; dito, ang mga tipikal na owl ay isang subfamily Striginae. Ito ay hindi suportado ng higit pang mga kamakailang pananaliksik (tingnan ang Cypselomorphae para sa mga detalye), ngunit ang mga relasyon ng mga owls sa pangkalahatan ay hindi pa nalutas.
