Ang apoptosis ay isang proseso ng nakaprogramang kamatayan ng sihay(programmed cell death o PCD) na maaaring mangyari sa mga organismong multiselular. Ang mga pangyayaring biokemikal ay humahantong sa mga karakteristikong pagbabago sa sihay(morpolohiya) at kamatayan. Ang ang mga pagbabagong ito ay kinabibilangan ng blebbing, pagliit ng sihay, nukleyar na pragramentasyon, kondensasyon ng kulayin (kromatin) at kromosomal na pragmentasyon ng DNA.
