Ang L-isomer nito ay isa sa mga 22 protinohenikong asidong amino, i.e., ang bumubuo sa mga protina. Ang mga codon nito ay GCU, GCC, GCA, at GCG. Inuuri ito bilang nonpolar na asidong amino. Ang L-Alanine ay sumusunod lamang sa leucine, bumubuo sa 7.8% ng panugnahing pagkakatayo sa isang samplo ng 1,150 protina.[2] Ang D-Alanine ay makikita sa mga dingding ng selula ng mga bakterya sa ilang antibiyotikong peptide.
