เกาลูน (อักษรโรมัน: Kowloon; จีน: 九龍; แปลตรงตัว: "เก้ามังกร") เป็นพื้นที่ในเขตบริหารพิเศษฮ่องกง สาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีน ประกอบด้วยคาบสมุทรเกาลูนและนิวเกาลูน ใน ค.ศ. 2006 พื้นที่นี้มีประชากร 2,019,533 คน และความหนาแน่นประชากรที่ 43,033/km2 (111,450/sq mi) เมื่อเทียบกับเกาะฮ่องกงและพื้นที่อื่นในนิวเทอร์ริทอรีส์ เกาลูนเป็นพื้นที่ที่มีประชากรมากที่สุดในฮ่องกง คาบสมุทรนี้มีพื้นที่ประมาณ 47 ตารางกิโลเมตร (18 ตารางไมล์)

ชื่อ

ชื่อเกาลูนแปลว่า "มังกรเก้าตัว" (九 เก้า 龍 มังกร) ซึ่งมีที่มาจากยอดสูง 8 ยอดที่อยู่ในบริเวณนี้และจักรพรรดิจีน 1 พระองค์ คือ: ยอดเขาเกาลูน, Tung Shan, Tate's Cairn, Temple Hill, Unicorn Ridge, Lion Rock, Beacon Hill, Crow's Nest และจ้าว ปิ่ง[1] ข้อมูลในคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 19 บางส่วนสะกดชื่อเมืองในอักษรโรมันเป็น 'Kawloong'[2]

ประวัติศาสตร์

เกาลูนตกเป็นของอังกฤษเมื่อวันที่ 11 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2403 ตามสนธิสัญญาปักกิ่งที่จักรพรรดิเสียนเฟิงจำต้องลงนามเพื่อยุติสงครามกับอังกฤษ นับเป็นดินแดนส่วนที่ 2 ที่จีนต้องเสียให้แก่อังกฤษในสงครามฝิ่น

ข้อมูลเมื่อ 2011 มีประชากรที่อาศัยอยู่ในเกาลูน 2,108,419 คน[3] ประมาณ 86% ของพลเมืองใช้ภาษากวางตุ้งเป็นภาษาหลัก ส่วน 2.3% ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษ และ 1.2% ใช้ภาษาจีนกลาง[3]
