การระบาดทั่วของโควิด-19 ได้รับการยืนยันว่าไปถึงสาธารณรัฐประชาชนโดเนตสค์ หรือ DNR ในเดือนมีนาคม ค.ศ. 2020 โดยสาธารณรัฐประชาชนโดเนตสค์เป็นกำลังนิยมการแบ่งแยกดินแดนที่ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากรัสเซีย ซึ่งควบคุมประมาณหนึ่งในสามของอาณาเขตของแคว้นโดเนตสค์ของยูเครน

เมื่อวันที่ 12 มกราคม ค.ศ. 2020 องค์การอนามัยโลก (WHO) ยืนยันว่าไวรัสโคโรนาสายพันธุ์ใหม่เป็นสาเหตุของโรคทางเดินหายใจในกลุ่มคนในนครอู่ฮั่น มณฑลหูเป่ย์ ประเทศจีน ซึ่งรายงานต่อองค์การอนามัยโลกเมื่อวันที่ 31 ธันวาคม ค.ศ. 2019[2][3]

อัตราส่วนผู้เสียชีวิตสำหรับโควิด-19 นั้นต่ำกว่าโรคซาร์สใน ค.ศ. 2003 มาก[4][5] แต่การแพร่เชื้อนั้นมากกว่าอย่างน่าสังเกต โดยมีจำนวนผู้เสียชีวิตทั้งหมดมีความหมาย[6][4]
