กปาลิกะ

ในพุทธศาสนาวัชรยาน ตรีศูลที่ปักด้วยกะโหลกมนุษย์ ("ขัฏวางคะ"; ในภาพ) เชื่อว่ามาจากกปาลิกะ^[1]

กปาลิกะเป็นอดีตธรรมเนียมตันตระแต่ไม่ตามปุราณะของลัทธิไศวะ ที่มีต้นกำเนิดในอินเดียยุคกลางระหว่างศตวรรษที่ 7-8^{[2][3][4][5][6]} คำนี้มาจากคำสันสกฤต กปาละ ตรงกับคำว่า กบาล แปลว่า "กะโหลก" ดังนั้น กปาลิกะ แปลว่า "ผู้ถือกะโหลก"^{[2][3][4][5][6]}

กปาลิกะหมายถึงนักพรตลัทธิย่อยของลัทธิไศวะที่ซึ่งโดยธรรมเนียมแล้วเป็นผู้ถือตรีศูลที่มีกะโหลกปักอยู่ข้างบน (ขัฏวางคะ) และใช้กะโหลกมนุษย์เป็นบาตรขอทาน^{[2][3][4][5][6]} บูชาพระไภรวะ ซึ่งเป็นปางดุร้ายของพระศิวะ ผ่านการเลียนแบบพฤติกรรมและลักษณะของพระไภรวะในฐานะการปฏิบัติบูชา^{[2][2][3][4][5]} ใช้เถ้าถ่านจากที่เผาศพป้ายตามร่างกาย,^{[2][3][4][5][6]} ไว้ผมยาวและพันกันยุ่ง^{[2][3][4][5][6]} รวมถึงมีส่วนในพิธีกรรมที่ไม่เป็นที่ยอมรับของสังคม เช่น มีเพศสสัมพันธ์กับสตรีในวรรณะล่าง, บูชายัญมนุษย์, ทานทั้งเนื้อสัตว์และสุรา และถวายบูชาด้วยน้ำกาม^{[2][3][4][5][6]}
