แท่นเทศน์มานูเอลินที่คอนเวนโตเดกริสโต (Convento de Cristo) โทมาร์ ประเทศโปรตุเกส

แท่นเทศน์ (อังกฤษ: pulpit) มาจากภาษาละติน “Pulpitum” ที่แปลว่า “รั่งร้าน” หรือ “แท่น” หรือ “เวที” เป็นแท่นที่ยกสูงจากพื้น จัดเป็นธรรมาสน์ ใช้สำหรับบาทหลวงแสดงธรรมเทศนาในบทพระวรสาร ส่วนของศาสนาจารย์ใช้เป็นแท่นเทศนา

วิหารสมัยยุคเฟื่องฟูของพระศาสนจักรคาทอลิกจะมีที่ตั้งสำหรับปาฐกสองที่ โดยด้านซ้ายของผู้เข้าร่วมพิธีจะเป็น “แท่นเทศน์” เพราะการที่แท่นเทศน์มักใช้ในการอ่านจากพระวรสาร ด้านนี้ของโบสถ์จึงเรียกว่าด้านพระวรสาร (gospel side)

ทางด้านขวาจะมี “แท่นอ่าน” (lectern) ที่มาจากภาษาละติน “lectus” ที่แปลว่า “อ่าน” เพราะเป็นที่สำหรับการอ่านเป็นส่วนใหญ่ที่มักจะใช้โดยฆราวาสในการอ่านบทสอนจากคัมภีร์ (ยกเว้นบทสอนจากพระวรสาร) เป็นที่นำผู้เข้าร่วมพิธีในการสวดมนต์ หรือเป็นที่ใช้ประกาศ เพราะด้านนี้ของคริสต์ศาสนสถานเป็นด้านที่ใช้อ่านบทจดหมาย (epistle lesson) ด้านนี้บางครั้งจึงเรียกว่าด้าน “บทจดหมาย”[1] ในบางโบสถ์แท่นอ่านซึ่งเป็นที่อ่านบทจดหมาย (Epistle) ก็อยู่ทางขวาและแท่นเทศน์อยู่ทางซ้าย

โปรเตสแตนต์

ในคริสตจักรของนิกายโปรเตสแตนต์ แท่นเทศน์ถือว่าเป็นสิ่งสำคัญที่สุดในโบสถ์ และจะตั้งตรงกลางหน้าผู้เข้าร่วมทำพิธีในโบสถ์และยกสูง แท่นเทศน์ใช้เป็นที่ผู้สอนศาสนายืน แท่นอาจจะตกแต่งด้วยผ้าห้อยหน้าแท่น (Antependium) ที่เป็นผ้าที่ห้อยคลุมลงมาจากด้านหน้าของแท่น หรืออาจจะมีการตกแต่งด้วยดอกไม้

ในคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 18 มีการสร้างแท่นเทศน์สามชั้นที่มักสร้างกันในประเทศที่พูดภาษาอังกฤษ การสร้างเป็นสามชั้นก็เพื่อแสดงความสำคัญของการอ่านบทสอน ชั้นล่างสุดใช้ในการประกาศข่าวของชุมชน ชั้นกลางสำหรับอ่านพระวรสาร และชั้นสูงสุดสำหรับการเทศนา

ในโบสถ์อีแวนเจลิคัลบางแห่งแท่นเทศน์จะตั้งอยู่บนแท่นตรงกลาง และจะเป็นเฟอร์นิเจอร์ชิ้นใหญ่ที่สุดในโบสถ์ทั้งนี้เพื่อเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของการประกาศคำสอนของพระเจ้า ในโบสถ์อีแวนเจลิคัลในปัจจุบันแท่นเทศน์จะเล็กลงกว่าที่เคยมีมาถ้ามี และจะใช้หลังการร้องเพลงสวดและยังคงตั้งอยู่กลางโบสถ์

แอมโบ

ในโบสถ์ที่มีที่สำหรับปาฐกที่เดียวที่ใช้เป็นทั้งแท่นเทศน์และแท่นอ่านจะเรียกว่า “แอมโบ” (ambo) ที่มาจากภาษากรีกที่แปลว่า “แท่น” ที่เดิมเป็นยกพื้นที่ยกสูงที่ตั้งอยู่กลางทางเดินกลางที่ใช้เป็นที่อ่านจดหมายคำสอนและพระวรสาร และบางครั้งก็จะใช้เป็นที่เทศนา
