జగమే మాయ బ్రతుకే మాయ పాట 1953 లో విడుదలైన దేవదాసు సినిమా కోసం సముద్రాల రచించారు. ఈ గీతాన్ని ఘంటసాల వెంకటేశ్వరరావు హృద్యంగా గానం చేయగా సి.ఆర్. సుబ్బరామన్ సంగీతాన్ని అందించాడు. ఈ పాట వాస్తవానికి ఎం ఎస్ విశ్వనాథన్ స్వరపరిచాడు. అద్వైత భావాలతో కూడిన ఈ పాటను మల్లాది రామకృష్ణశాస్త్రి రచిందాడని మరో వాదన. ఒక సందర్భంలో సముద్రాల ఈ విధంగా తెలిపాడు. " వాస్తవం ఏమిటంటే, నేను ఆ సమయంలో చాలా బిజీగా ఉన్నాను. నా వద్ద సమయం లేదు. రామకృష్ణ శాస్త్రి నాకు మంచి స్నేహితుడు. అతను ఆ పాటలు రాయడం ద్వారా నాకు సహాయం చేసాడు. ఆ పాటలకు తన పేరును క్రెడిట్ చేయమని ఆయన నన్ను ఎప్పుడూ అడగలేదు. ఆ విషయానికి, నా కొడుకు రామానుజచార్య (సముద్ర జూనియర్) కూడా నాకు మద్దతు ఇచ్చాడు. (సినిమా) పరిశ్రమలో ఒకరికొకరు సహాయపడటం ఒక సాధారణ పద్ధతి.”[1]

నేపథ్యం

దేవదాసు పార్వతి చిన్ననాటి నుండి ప్రేమించుకుంటారు. లండన్ లో పైచదువుల తర్వాత తిరిగివచ్చిన దేవదాసు పార్వతిని పెళ్ళిచేసుకోవాలనుకుంటాడు. పెద్దల అంగీకారం లభించని కారణం వారు ప్రేమికులు గానే మిగిలిపోతారు. పార్వతిని మరచిపోలేని దేవదాసు మధ్యానికి బానిసై ఆరోగ్యాన్ని పాడుచేకుంటాడు. అలాంటి మానసిక పరిస్థితిలో జీవితం మీద వైరాగ్యంతో తత్వాల్ని జీవిత సత్యాల్ని రంగరించి విషాదంగా ఆలపిస్తాడు.
