Moldavët

Moldavët janë një grup etnik rumanisht-folës dhe grupi etnik më i madh i Republikës së Moldavisë (75.1% e popullsisë që nga viti 2014) dhe një pakicë e konsiderueshme në Rumani, në Itali, në Ukrainë dhe në Rusi. Ekziston një polemikë e vazhdueshme, që pjesërisht përfshin përkufizimin gjuhësor të përkatësisë etnike, nëse vetidentifikimi i moldavëve përbën një grup etnik të dallueshëm dhe të ndarë nga rumunët, ose një nëngrup. Shtrirja e vetidentifikimit si rumunë në Republikën e Moldavisë ndryshon (2.1% e popullsisë u vetidentifikua si rumune në 2004 dhe 7% u vetidentifikua si rumune në 2014).

Varianti moldavian përdoret gjithashtu për t'iu referuar të gjithë banorëve të territorit të Principatës historike të Moldavisë, tani i ndarë midis Rumanisë (47.5%), Moldavisë (30.5%) dhe Ukrainës (22%), pavarësisht nga identiteti i tyre etnik. Në Rumani, vendasit e Moldavisë Perëndimore që identifikohen me termin në përgjithësi deklarojnë përkatësinë etnike rumune, ndërsa moldavët nga Besarabia (duke përfshirë Republikën e Moldavisë) zakonisht quhen "besarabianë".
