Živá fosília

Živé fosílie alebo žijúce skameneniny sú organizmy, ktoré vznikli pred mnohými miliónmi rokov a nevyhynuli, pričom počas evolúcie sa zmenili len málo alebo takmer vôbec. O niektorých druhoch sa pôvodne myslelo, že už dávno vyhynuli.

Medzi živočíchmi k nim patria: tapíry, krokodíly, okapia pásavá, latiméria divná, hoacín chochlatý, hatérie, ramenonožce, lodienky, šváby, hrotnáče prezývané aj ako ostrochvosty, žralok Owstonov atď. Medzi rastlinami sú to napr. metasekvoja čínska, wollemia nobilis, ginko dvojlaločné, lagarostrobus franklini, cykasy atď.

Existujú neoverené správy o legendárnych príšerách vo svete, ktoré by podľa niektorých teórií mohli byť žijúci zástupcovia oficiálne vyhynutých živočíchov. Patria k nim napríklad lochnesská príšera, yowie, yeti, sasquatch, cadborosaurus atď. Výskumom podobných bytostí sa zaoberajú kryptozoológovia.
