Yoithongai

Yoithongai (also spelled Yoithongngai, Meitei: ꯌꯣꯢꯊꯣꯡꯉꯥꯏ) was a king of the Khuman dynasty in Ancient Kangleipak (now called Manipur, India).

Yoithongai (also spelled Yoithongngai, Meitei: ꯌꯣꯢꯊꯣꯡꯉꯥꯏ) was a king of the Khuman dynasty in Ancient Kangleipak (now called Manipur, India). He ruled from about 760 CE to 800 CE.[1][2] He lived during the time of Meitei kings Khongtekcha and Keirencha from the Ningthouja dynasty.[3][4]

Life and rule

Yoithongai was the son of King Punshi Yumoiba and Queen Nganurol Chanu Khambi. After his father's death around 700 CE, the Khuman throne went to his sister's side of the family. Her son, Senba Mimaba, who came from the Luwang dynasty, became king. Yoithongai worked under him as the deputy king.[1][2][3][4]

After Senba Mimaba died, Yoithongai started a rebellion and became king of Khuman in 760 CE. This brought the royal line of Khuman back to the father's side of the family.[1][2][3][4]

When Yoithongai became king, Senba Mimaba’s three sons ran away. The oldest son, Laiku, went to Leitang. The second son, Laikha, went to Uchiwa. The youngest son, Laipha, went to the Maring region and became part of the Maring people.[1][2][3][4]

Legacy

Yoithongai ruled until around 800 CE. After him, his youngest son Haoramton became king. People remember Yoithongai as the ruler who brought back the original Khuman royal bloodline after a short time of Luwang rule.[1][2][3][4]
