WikiTribune was a news wiki. It was started by Jimmy Wales,[3] who also helped to start Wikipedia. The goal of WikiTribune was to fight fake news. It did this by having both professional journalists and volunteers work together.[4]

History and Business

Jimmy Wales started WikiTribune in April 2017. He wanted to make a place where the news was real and correct. The money to start it came from people who gave donations. They raised over £137,000. Donors like Google and Craig Newmark also gave money.[5][6]

In 2018, WikiTribune laid off its paid journalists. This was a change in the plan. After this, volunteers could publish stories without them being checked by professionals first. Wales said that the website's design was not good and did not help the community work well together.[7][8]

The website was a for-profit business,[9] but it did not have ads. It was paid for by donations from readers.[10] People were asked to give money every month,[11] but the news was free for everyone to read.[12]

Structure and Reception

WikiTribune had a team of professional journalists. They wrote stories. A group of volunteers helped them. The volunteers would check facts, proofread, and find sources for the stories.

A group of advisors also helped Jimmy Wales. Some of these advisors were Lily Cole, Jeff Jarvis, Guy Kawasaki and Lawrence Lessig.[10]

People had different opinions about WikiTribune. Some people liked the idea of a new way to get news that was not fake.[13][14][15] Others were not sure it would work well. Some journalists said it was an interesting idea, but they were not sure if it could really fix the problems in the news business.[16]
