Checkuser question

Hi, there's someone who keeps making new accounts just to revert their own edits back and forth on articles here, for example, Special:Contribs/WilliamAthertonDeeBaker. These accounts usually get blocked, but they just make a new one. Would it be allowed by checkuser policy to find the IP/IP range behind the accounts and block that? TagUser (talk) 20:26, 31 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

I was noticing that pattern this morning, and it is probably worth closer inspection. Peterdownunder (talk) 06:04, 1 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
I don't know if that means I should report them to WP:RFCU? Should I specifically ask for the IP to be blocked? TagUser (talk) 00:53, 2 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
As a checkuser I can see what IPs an editor is using. When a user gets blocked by a checkuser, they can also see and block other IPs that are being used. All of our checkusers here are admins, so they can also block problem IPs without needing to run inappropriate checks. If you see/suspect a problem user, you can report on the checkuser page, or on the admin noticeboard. Many problem users are not just a problem on Simple English, but also disrupt other projects too. The account you mentioned here was already globally blocked by the time I got the message. Thanks for making the reports, it all helps. Peterdownunder (talk) 03:54, 2 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I know that the account is blocked/locked but I am hoping the IP behind this account can be blocked too, if it's also the IP behind the many other accounts. TagUser (talk) 04:14, 2 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
The IPs used by this editor are blocked, that's part of the process. However, users sometimes are able to access other IPs, to get around the block, report them if you think this is happening. Peterdownunder (talk) 04:20, 2 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
I am fairly sure that such a block on the IP will only last 24 hours after the last login, per m:Autoblock and Special:AutoblockList. Also, if they use an IPv6, their IP address will typically change often, usually within a /64 range (see en:WP:/64). Thus the autoblock may not prevent them from editing from the same hotspot. If I see this user again, I will report them. TagUser (talk) 04:29, 2 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

A question on a article deletion

You have deleted the article Ajey: The Untold Story of a Yogi, i was the creator of that, no one has written the rules which the page was not following. Could I know them?? Columbidae5 (talk) 15:26, 1 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the question. All our articles need to be notable and meet our notability guidelines. For movies, read this page: Wikipedia:Notability (movies). Your article was not seen to have met those guidelines. As the movie had also not yet been released, it is even more difficult to meet the guidelines. It may well become a notable movie in the future, but at this stage, many of the sources are just pre-publicity hype. Hope that helps. Apart from the problem with notability, the article was well written. Peterdownunder (talk) 04:03, 2 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Could you be our school project ambassador again?

Dear Peter, I've been grateful for your support over the years that I've had my students edit Simple English Wikipedia for our class project. I'm about to start it again. Are you in a position to help with any hiccups that occur as my students learn how to be good Wikipedians? If not, do you know another SE Wikipedia editor who's active and willing? Thanks ever so much, Swim123blue (talk) Swim123blue (talk) 19:04, 7 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi Swim123blue, I should be in a position to help. Peterdownunder (talk) 23:17, 7 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

President-elect of Ecuador

President-elect of Ecuador should be retargeted to President of Ecuador. Per Auntof6's point, targeting to someone who used to be president-elect doesn't make since. Steven1991 didn't clarify where he wanted it to redirect to, but if he was agreeing with Auntof6, that would make it at least 2-2 and the first 2 respondents may not have seen Auntof6's comment. Reliable sources

The English Wikipedia has a, "Reliable sources Noticeboard" where we can ask if a source is reliable - does this Simple English Wikipedia have a place to ask if a source is reliable?-Baangla (talk) 06:15, 12 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

No we don't. Use the English Wikipedia noticeboard. Peterdownunder (talk) 09:25, 12 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I have been told to edit this Simple wikipedia and prove that I understand the rules before my indefinite block on the English Wikipedia is lifted. If I am in doubt, can I ask you if a source is reliable? If not, where should I ask?-Baangla (talk) 09:44, 12 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sure, you can ask. Or put a message on Simple Talk, I'm others will offer plenty of advice. Peterdownunder (talk) 09:47, 12 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Okay, thanks! Please take a look at the complaint at https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard#Sock_puppet also!-Baangla (talk) 09:55, 12 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sounds like this could be a big problem (without looking at the actual page in question). Best advice I can give is leave it alone, walk away, find something non-controversial to work on, and don't engage at all with the other editor. Sone arguments aren't worth the drama. Peterdownunder (talk) 10:02, 12 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I have walked away but aren't you going to take any action?-Baangla (talk) 13:31, 12 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Something you deleted

Two years ago, you closed the RfD for Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2023/Template:Welcome-enonestrike. However, Template:Welcome1strike was created last year. Do you think a deletion discussion should be started for that page? ~2025-34787-00 (talk) 23:48, 19 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

You are probably correct, the argument was that such a warning should not be given via a template. Happy for you to start the RFD process, Peterdownunder (talk) 06:21, 20 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

You may be an eligible candidate for the U4C election

Greetings,

The Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) seeks candidates for the 2026 election. The U4C is the global committee responsible for overseeing enforcement of the Universal Code of Conduct. Elections are held annually, if elected a committee member serves for two years.

This year the U4C requires candidates to hold administrator rights on at least one wiki, which is why you are being contacted as you appear to hold this right. There are other requirements, such as candidates must be at least 18 years old and may not be employed by the Wikimedia Foundation or other related chapters and affiliates. You can find more information in the call for candidates on Meta-wiki. Additionally, the committee's working language is English; some ability to communicate in English is required.

The election opens on 18 May, if you are eligible and interested you have until 10 May to submit your candidacy. There will be a week in between for candidates to answer questions from the community. Voting takes place privately in SecurePoll, successful candidates must receive at least 60% support. More information is available on the 2026 Elections page, including timelines and other candidacy information. If you read over the material and consider yourself qualified, please consider submitting your name to run for the committee. If you think someone else in your community might be interested and qualified, please encourage them to run.

In partnership with the U4C -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:11, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

How do you put the user boxes on your profile??

Sorry for a weird question but how did you put the user boxes on your profile?? I've always wanted to figure that out BubsDockyZero5 (talk) 13:04, 13 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

The best way to work out how things are done is look at the source code (Change source). If you look at the source on my user page you can see how the boxes are added. If you go to User:Peterdownunder/Userbox you can find the source code to make you own box - you can change color, text and image to suit what you want.Peterdownunder (talk) 20:50, 13 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

State of Simple English Wikipedia

Hello, I wanted to ask you a few questions. What do you think about the state of Simple English Wikipedia? Do you think that at least some important pages are written in a manner that is simple and different enough from English Wikipedia to be useful? What writing techniques do you believe readers benefit from? In your opinion, is it getting better or worse over time? canadachick (talk) 18:11, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Excellent questions. I am very concerned that so many of the pages are not written in "Simple English." When I started 18 years ago there was a lot more emphasis on sticking to the basic word lists. There was always an argument that a word score test like the "Flesch" readability did not make a page readable. Readability is a complex set of factors, however the reading score was a great place to start. There used to be dictionary extension for Firefox that used the Basic English wordlists, and would underline everything in the text that was not on the lists. Sadly this tool is no longer available. For a longtime there was a "Readability of Wikipedia" tool that would compare articles on both Enwiki and Simple and score them. Sadly this is no longer. There is an online tool Test and Improve that is useful. Recently I have been experimenting with AI to see how it goes "translating" pages into Simple English. This so far has been quite good - with plenty of editing. Generating new Simple English pages with AI does not give any useful content for all the reasons that AI gets a bad reputation. Recently I have concentrated on getting articles into Simple English, a great challenge and certainly not a simple task. The best advice is to become very familiar with the basic word lists, use online methods to score your writing - and be prepared to edit and edit again to keep it Simple. I have thought about tagging every page that is not simple, but probably the effort would be better spent fixing them, or tagging the pages that are good. If we are not simple, we are just another English Wikipedia. Perhaps we need a group to take on the challenge. What are your thought? Peterdownunder (talk) 00:03, 18 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Just looked at my most recent article, Hopetoun, Victoria, and have put the scores on the talk page. Complex place names like Yarriambiack make it harder to get a better score. Peterdownunder (talk) 01:18, 18 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) I just went through an exercise of clicking through over 150 random pages and ignoring settlements I only found about a dozen pages where I felt simplification was needed. The vast majority of them needed only minor linking or inline explanations. I think our core articles are in good shape. I think that a problem is happening whereby new editors are creating pages that aren't simple and nobody is issuing them with warnings on their talk pages. Most of these seem to be partial copy & pasted from enwiki and I'm not sure they can be QDed as they are only, usually, the lede. Perhaps we can expand our QD criteria to allow for such deletions. Thoughts? fr33kman 18:39, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think this might generally be a problem: you start and create a page that perhaps isn't mainstream-top-500 pages, but perhaps a little more specialized. Given that this wiki only has few editors it might be that when, you stumble on the page again months or years later, there hasn't been much change. Combine that with a subject that is controversial where people dare not edit. Other than getting more editors from a more diverse background, there I'd little we can do to combat such problems Eptalon (talk) 18:55, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sometimes a poor quality page is better than just another redlink, I would generally prefer to fix rather than delete. My current "crusade" is focussed on getting back to the Basic English wordlist. If you find pages that are in urgent need let me know. Peterdownunder (talk) 21:07, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I do agree that there is a bit of complexity creep but I think it's not a major issue yet. If we, personally, go about looking for and fixing problems that is only part of the solution. I think we need to educate new users about the word list (I had to do this recently). fr33kman 21:17, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
