A dad joke is a short joke, usually a pun, presented as a one-liner or a question and answer, but not as a story.^[1] Typically inoffensive, it is usually told with humorous intent, or to create a negative emotion at the joke due to its simple humor.^[2] Many dad jokes can be anti-jokes, or a joke that takes the question literally making an intentionally unfunny punchline. An example of one is the simple "Why did the chicken cross the road" joke, with the punchline being "to get to the other side".

A common type of dad joke goes like this: A kid will say to their dad "I'm hungry," to which the dad will reply, "Hi, Hungry, I'm Dad." The word "hungry" isn't needed for this type of joke, as any state-of-being adjective can be used.

Although the exact origin of the term dad joke is unknown, a writer for the Gettysburg Times wrote a defense of the genre in June 1987 under the headline "Don't ban the 'Dad' jokes; preserve and revere them".^[3] The term "dad jokes" was mentioned in the American sitcom How I Met Your Mother in 2008^[4] as well as the Australian quiz show Spicks and Specks in 2009.^[5] In September 2019, Merriam-Webster added dad joke to the dictionary.^[6]
