Terry Hui is a Canadian businessman and philanthropist. He is the president and chief executive officer of Concord Pacific Developments Inc., a Vancouver-based real estate development and investment company.[1]
He is known for his role in the redevelopment of former industrial lands in Canada, including the former Expo 86 lands in Vancouver and the Concord CityPlace development in Toronto.[2][3]
Hui was born in Hong Kong and later moved to California, where he completed high school.[4] He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics in 1983.[5] He later completed a master's degree in electrical engineering at Santa Clara University.[6]
He moved to Vancouver in 1985.[7]
After graduate school, Hui worked with a family development business in Vancouver, contributing to residential projects including Cambridge Gardens near City Square.[8]
In the early 1990s, Hong Kong businessman Li Ka-shing acquired the former Expo 86 lands through Concord Pacific, and a controlling interest in the company was later sold to the Hui family.[9] In 1992, Hui became chief executive officer of Concord Pacific at age 29.[10]
One of Concord Pacific's largest projects under Hui's leadership was the redevelopment of the northern shore of False Creek in Vancouver.[11] The broader False Creek North planning area has included housing, parks, schools, childcare facilities, retail space, and public waterfront access.[12]
Beginning in 1997, Hui led Concord Pacific's expansion into Toronto through the Concord CityPlace development, a large residential and mixed-use community near Lake Ontario.[13]
Hui has also served on the board of the Quantum Gravity Society, which supports research in physics.[14][15]
Hui has served as a director of the Metro Vancouver Board of Trade.[16]
He has received honours including the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, the Rix Award for Engaged Community Citizenship, and recognition as a UN Global Citizen Laureate honouree.[17]
Hui's recreational interests include cycling, skiing, and sailing.[18]
