Description of the Summoner
Chaucer describes the Summoner as having a chubby red face with black facial hair and eczema. With such descriptions as “Who had a fiery-red, cherubic face”... “With black and scabby brows and a scanty beard” and “For eczema he had; his eyes were narrow”. Children fear his scared, pimpled face. Unfortunately there is nothing to get rid of the boils and pimples on his face as noted in the following quotes; “He had a face that little children feared” and “No ointment ... to free him of boils and pimples”. The Summoner is also a heavy drinker with horrid smelling breath The Narrator, in sarcastic contrast, calls him a 'good man' and noble in nature “A better fellow no man could find.” and “He was a noble rogue and a kind”. Yet this noble man easily excuses his friend for their womanizing activities and keeps their secrets “A good friend to keep a concubine ,/ A twelvemonth and excuse him fully”. At the same time he is a greedy man and takes bribes to keep secrets for others wrong doings even though he is the leader of wrongdoers "Knew their secrets, they by him were led” . Chaucer describes his greed “For in his purse he should punished be.” "‘The purse is the Archdeacon’s hell,’ said he." and finally "Making him speak, and cry, as madman would".
The lines 220- 232 from the poem describe his appearance and lines 233-264 from the poem describe his personality.
Chaucer used spelling of words that are spelled differently today, here are some of the words that are spelled differently:
Chaucer’s does not have a high opinion of the Summoner. Chaucer describes him as a irritable, sinful, guilty drunk who abuses his power over others. Specific quotes that describe Chaucer's opinion are "Making him speak, and cry, as madman would" to describe his irritability and "For his curse each guilty man should dread" as well as "In such a case of the Archdeacon’s curse," to support the sinful, guilty nature. His drunkenness is further illustrated by the following; "‘The purse is the Archdeacon’s hell,’ said he." and “He loved garlic … and strong wine as red as blood”.
Chaucer uses some words to describe the Summoner that require knowledge of the time period. Such words as buckler, a small forearm shield used in self defense. Another is Carbuncled meaning skin inflammation. Yet another is Ceruse which means white lead.
