What is a Vape?
A "vape" aka "vaporizer" is a popular portable device people use to gain the satisfaction of smoking but without the harmful effects that are associated with tradition tobacco smoking.
How does a Vape work? A portable vaporizer/mod is a device used to raise the temperature of components and turn it into vapor without creating combustion. It is used to release the active ingredients from plant material, herbs, oils, waxy oils, or liquid. A healthier alternative to smoking, vaporizers heat the material at a much lower temperature when compared to smoking and avoids the inhalation of many irritating toxic and carcinogenic by-products. Vaporizers are also known as portable hookas and are allowed in most public places. When used with oils/liquids, there is no odor. Since most oils/liquids are made of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin, they are 100% safe and FDA approved. Oils come both with and without nicotine.
Although the vaporizer concept has been around for decades, it is only in the last 15 years or so that commercial vaporizers have been manufactured and sold. Today, the benefits of vaporization are becoming more widely known, consequently the number and variety of devices has been rapidly increasing. This makes classifying vaporizers unexpectedly difficult, but every vaporizer has two essential components: a heat source, and a delivery system. Heating is produced either by convection, or conduction. Vaporizers that operate with a convection heating element, your materials are never in direct contact with what is heating it. What happens is hot air flows through your material or whatever contents thus releasing the newly active ingredient. Conduction vaporizers utilize a heating element directly in contact with your material. This then releases the active ingredients. Almost every vaporizer or mod benefit from a combination of both convection and conduction. Unlike burning, vaporizing produces a clean potent vapor free of tar and other carcinogens.
There are many types of vaporizer devices out on the market however mechanical vapes or mechanical mods have led the market in being most popular over the past few years. Unlike traditional vaporizer pens that are aesthetic, a purely mechanical mod is a very basic personal vaporizer device. It is a tube that holds a replaceable rechargeable battery and on the tube is a button that when engaged completes a circuit that delivers unregulated current to the atomizer. A mechanical mod contains no wiring or soldering, nor any electronics and comes in all different shapes and sizes. A major reason some vapers choose a mechanical mod aside from aesthetics is their durability. In a typical personal vaporizer, the device is heavily dependent on electronics and if any component fails, repair is usually not possible for the average user. Some electronic personal vaporizers are also basically a disposable device in that once battery end-of-life has been reached, the battery cannot be replaced. Some choose mechanical mods for the ability to run low resistance atomizers that cannot be run on other forms of vaping equipment; however, this is riskier than using standard resistance equipment, so requires special care. Are mechanical mod/vapes safe?
No lithium battery powered device is 100% safe given the amount of energy stored in what is a comparatively small battery. Electronic personal vaporizers are generally safer than mechanical mods due to their inbuilt safety features that protect against faults such as short circuits. However, good quality mechanical mod equipment in the hands of an experienced person is quite safe.
What are the risks? Issues such as short circuits can cause a battery to discharge at such a rate that it heats up to a point of it venting and catching fire. If the vent gases cannot escape, explosion is also a possibility.
