Tragsa (short for Empresa de Transformación Agraria, S.A.) is a Spanish public company that is part of the Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales (SEPI, the State Society for Industrial Holdings). It was created as an official tool of the State, used to help with rural development.[1]

Starting from this original focus on the environment, the company has grown to work in many other areas too, such as building infrastructure, water management, and food safety. Tragsa has more than 16,000 employees. Over the company's 40-year history, it has carried out close to 200,000 projects.[2] Jesús Casas Grande was named president of the Tragsa Group on 6 September 2018. He took over from Elvira Rodríguez[3], who had held the position since March 2017.

History and structure

The legal rules for Tragsa and its subsidiary Tragsatec are set out in Additional Provision 24 of Law 9/2017 of 8 November, on Public Sector Contracts (LCSP), published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) No. 272 on 9 November, which came into force on 9 March 2018. They are also covered by Royal Decree 69/2019 of 15 February 2019, which sets out the legal rules for Empresa de Transformación Agraria, and its subsidiary, Tecnologías y Servicios Agrarios, S.A., S.M.E., M.P., published in BOE No. 49 on 26 February.[4]

In 2003, the Tragsa Group became part of the Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales (SEPI).[5]

Presence around the world

The Tragsa Group has taken part in 125 Spanish cooperation projects in countries across North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The company's international strategy is focused on developing projects together with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).[6]
