Times Books, earlier called the New York Times Book Company, is a book publishing imprint. It is owned by The New York Times Company and licensed to Henry Holt and Company.[1]

Times Books began as the New York Times Book Company in 1969.[2] This happened after The New York Times Company bought Quadrangle Books, a small book publisher in Chicago. Quadrangle Books was started in 1959 by Michael Braude. Its president was Melvin J. Brisk. The imprint was first run fully by The New York Times Company. In 1977, its name was changed to Times Books.

In 1984, The New York Times Company licensed Times Books to Random House. From 1991 to 1996, Peter Osnos was the head of Times Books during its time with Random House. Osnos later started PublicAffairs Books.[1][3]

In 2000, Times Books was licensed again as an imprint of Henry Holt and Company. Henry Holt is itself an imprint of Holtzbrinck Publishers/Macmillan, the United States part of the Georg von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group.[4]

Times Books has had a right of first refusal policy for manuscripts written by employees of The New York Times Company.[1] This means the imprint had the first chance to review some book manuscripts by company employees before other publishers.

Times Books is based at 120 Broadway in Manhattan, New York City.
