Template:Google maps/doc

This is a documentation subpage for Template:Google maps. It may contain usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page.

This template is a Citation Style 1 specific-source template based on {{Cite map}}. For centralised Citation Style 1 discussions, see Help talk:Citation Style 1.

This template is used for referencing maps published by Google LLC through their Google Maps service.

This template can also be set to emulate Citation Style 2 (CS2) style.

Note that unlike paper maps, Google offers dynamic sizing at variable scales. Major citation style guides omit a map scale in that situation so this template does not render any scale output.

• url – the URL for the map in question
• title – a "subtitle" for the map. The link text will appear as "<title>" if "title" is used; otherwise, it will be the page name.
• access-date – the full retrieval date.
• link – set to "no" to unlink the publisher.
• mode – set to "cs2" to use CS2 output (lower case only)
• ref: for Harvard-style referencing, if necessary
  • letter: a letter to append to a date or year for Harvard-style referencing, if necessary

Normal usage with automatic inclusion of page title (i.e. "Google maps", which is taken from the template's full page title "Template:Google maps/doc"):

generates this:

Using the optional "title" parameter:

• {{Google maps |url= http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=from:+E%20Market%20St/RT-308%[email protected],%20-73.912580+to:+RT-308%[email protected],%20-73.821096 |title= Driving directions to RT-308 |access-date= 11 August 2026}}

generates this:

• Google (11 August 2026). "Driving directions to RT-308" (Map). Google Maps. Google. Retrieved 11 August 2026.
