Stephanie Garber

Stephanie Garber is a Romantasy (that means romantic fantasy) writer from the United States. She is best known for her book series Caraval and Once Upon a Broken Heart, a story related to Caraval.[1] Both books are New York Times bestsellers.[1] Her books have been trending on BookTok, where Caraval has gained popularity.[2]

Awards

Garber won the YALSA Teens’ Top Ten (2003-2025) award in 2018 for her first novel, Caraval.[3] She also won the Junior Library Guild Selections (2012-2026) award for her book, the Alchemy of Secrets in 2025.[3] Both Caraval and Once Upon a Broken Heart are New York Times bestsellers.[1]

Career

Garber used to be a college resident director.[4] The job of college resident director means she was an adult living in the school.[4] Her job was to watch over the students.[4] She started writing to relax.[4] Her writing was rejected by editors around 200 times and it took six years of writing before Caraval, her first novel, was published.[1] She had eight different interested agents for her book Caraval.[5] She sent her book to fourteen editors.[5] Eight editors then bid over her book.[5] Garber eventually signed with Flatiron Books, who had won a sale on the book’s rights.[5] The process was completed on June 26, 2015.[5] 20th Century Fox bought the movie rights to Caraval, but the movie was never made.[6] The rights to translate Caraval were bought in advance in the United Kingdom by Hodder.[6] It was a six-figure deal, meaning it was a deal involving hundreds of thousands of dollars.[6]

Garber then wrote her second series Once Upon a Broken Heart.[1] The main characters are the character Jacks from the Caraval series and a new character named Evangeline.[7] Both book series are in the same world.[1] They have some of the same characters.[1]
