Stegomastodons were a species of gomphotheres and were distant relatives of elephants that went extinct in North America around 1.3 million years ago.

Stegomastodons were a species of gomphotheres and were distant relatives of elephants that went extinct in North America around 1.3 million years ago.

Stegomastodons crossed over to North America around 4 million years ago across the land bridge connecting North America and Asia.

They went extinct by being outcompeted by the more modern elephant relatives like mammoths and mastodons.
