Sirkka Turkka (2 February 1939 – 23 October 2021) was a Finnish poet. She won the Finlandia Prize in 1987 and the Eino Leino Prize in 2000.[1][

Sirkka Turkka (2 February 1939 – 23 October 2021) was a Finnish poet. She won the Finlandia Prize in 1987 and the Eino Leino Prize in 2000.[1][2]
Turkka died on 23 October 2021 at the age of 82.[3]
Sirkka Turkka was born in 1939, the daughter of Major Josef Wilhelm Turkka and clerk Elsa Mirjam Luoko. She attended school in Munkkiniemi, graduating in 1962. She subsequently studied at the University of Helsinki, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in the humanities in 1967. From 1967 to 1970, she attended the Equine Breeding School in Ypäjä.[4]
Turkka lived in Lohja and worked as a freelance writer from 1974 onward. In 1987, she became the first poet to receive the Finlandia Prize. In addition to her literary career, she worked in hospital libraries, was employed as a stable manager in Espoo from 1980 to 1981, and worked as an animal caretaker on a manor estate in Urjala between 1984 and 1986.[4]
