Sam Rinzel (born June 25, 2004) is an American professional ice hockey defenseman. He currently plays for the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Career

Before playing in the NHL, Rinzel played two seasons with the Waterloo Black Hawks of the United States Hockey League (USHL) and two years with the Minnesota Golden Gophers of the Big Ten Conference (B1G). He had a successful time with his teams. During his freshman season with the Golden Gophers, Rinzel was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team and the All-Big Ten Second Team.[1] The next year, he was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, an AHCA West First Team All-American, and was named to the All-Big Ten First Team.[2]

He was drafted 25th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2022 NHL entry draft.[3] On March 29, 2025, Rinzel signed a three-year, $950,000 entry-level contract to join the Blackhawks.[4]

On March 30, Rinzel made his NHL debut in a 5–2 loss against the Utah Hockey Club.[5] On April 6, Rinzel recorded his first NHL point, assisting on an Ilya Mikheyev goal in a 3–1 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins.[6] On October 11, Rinzel scored his first NHL goal against Sam Montembeault in a 3–2 loss against the Montreal Canadiens.[7]
