Ruatoria is a small rural town located on the East Coast of New Zealand's North Island, within the Gisborne District. It lies near the Waiapu River, approximately 30 kilometres northeast of Tokomaru Bay and around 130 kilometres north of Gisborne by road. Ruatoria serves as the principal service centre for the surrounding Waiapu Valley and is one of the country's most significant centres of Māori culture, with the majority of residents identifying as Māori, particularly from the local iwi of Ngāti Porou. The town is situated beneath the slopes of Mount Hikurangi, the highest non-volcanic mountain on the North Island, which holds deep cultural and spiritual importance in Māori tradition as one of the first places in the world to receive the sunrise.

Historically, Ruatoria developed as a farming and administrative settlement during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, supporting the surrounding sheep, cattle, and forestry industries. The region has long been associated with Ngāti Porou, whose history in the area predates European settlement by several centuries. Throughout the twentieth century, the town became a regional hub for education, healthcare, commerce, and community services for the isolated East Coast communities. Despite periods of economic decline caused by changes in agriculture, forestry, and population migration to larger urban centres, Ruatoria has remained an important cultural and social centre for the East Coast.

The economy of Ruatoria is primarily based on agriculture, horticulture, forestry, local government services, education, and tourism. Sheep and beef farming continue to play a major role in the surrounding district, while visitors are attracted by the area's scenic coastline, Māori cultural heritage, and access to Mount Hikurangi. The mountain is a popular destination for guided sunrise tours, featuring a series of large carved Māori sculptures near its summit that commemorate traditional creation stories.

Ruatoria experiences a temperate maritime climate characterised by warm, humid summers and mild winters. Due to its location on the eastern side of the North Island, the area receives abundant sunshine but is also susceptible to heavy rainfall and flooding during severe weather events, particularly those associated with ex-tropical cyclones. The surrounding landscape consists of steep hill country, native bush remnants, and extensive pastoral farmland.

Education within the township is provided by several schools serving students from the wider East Coast region. Community facilities include healthcare services, sports grounds, churches, marae, retail businesses, and government offices. Rugby union occupies an important place in local culture, and the district has produced numerous players who have represented provincial and national teams. Traditional Māori language, customs, kapa haka, and community events remain central to everyday life, with Te Reo Māori widely spoken alongside English.

Ruatoria's relative isolation has helped preserve much of its cultural identity and close-knit community atmosphere. The town continues to play an important role as the heart of the Waiapu Valley and the wider Ngāti Porou rohe, balancing its historical traditions with modern community development while maintaining strong connections to the land, whakapapa, and Māori heritage.
