Residential area

A residential area is a place with mostly homes, without much industry, business, or farming.

Residential areas are often created by zoning. Some residential areas only have single-family houses. Others have multi-family housing buildings, like apartments or condominiums. Sometimes large residential areas are built from a subdivision, with a plan that involves building many houses or buildings, at the same time as new roads and other infrastructure.

A residential area that is separated from a larger city may be a suburb or commuter town. If it is even further away, it may be an exurb.
