Proto Hyperion was a hypothetical moon of Saturn that existed 4.5-4 billion years ago.It is the predecessor of the current Saturnian moon Hyperion.Its estimated diameter ranges from 350-1000km or from the size of Mimas to the size of Tethys and had a mass 6% that of Titan [1] or 0.0013 Earth Masses and before the collision Titan or a "Proto Titan" had a mass of 0.0212 Earth Masses and a diameter of 4200-4500km.
The only present Moons of Saturn that existed 4 and a half billion years ago were Titan and Iapetus and non-existant moons like Chrysalis and Proto-Hyperion with other moons that we don't know about.About 4 billion years ago Titan's orbit started to rapidly expand because of tidal forces with Saturn [2].After a few thousand years Proto Hyperion entered a 2:1 orbital Resonance with Titan[3].Proto Hyperion being less massive felt the most tidal forces.Its orbit became more and more elongated and eccentric over time.Overtime,Proto-Hyperion crossed Titan's orbit and after the Resonance collapsed it didn't take long before they collided.[4]
The instability also affected Iapetus bringing it to its current inclination and eccentricity.The collision would have reshaped Titan without completely melting or vaporizing it.The icy outer layers would have been most affected while the interior remained largely intact.Titan's surface appears relatively young,lacking craters older than a few hundred million years.A large scale resurfacing event could explain this.[5]
After a few billion years debris from the impact would remain in Saturn's orbit potentially making a ring that dissolved a few million years after impact.This debris would continue to exist after the ring dissolved colliding and destroying some Proto moons,But about 1-3 billion years ago Hyperion formed from the debris of the rings.Hyperion then got into its present Resonance with Titan 400-500 million years ago.[6]
