Porter Weston Robinson (born July 15, 1992) is an American record producer, DJ, songwriter and singer who was born in Atlanta and was raised in North Carolina.[1]
He was first known for his electro house music and coined a subgenre named "complextro", in which he combined the words "complex" and "electro".[2] He caught the attention of dubstep artist Skrillex with his single track "Say My Name", and signed for his then new record label Owsla at 18. He then released his debut EP Spitfire in 2011.[3]
He released his debut studio album Worlds in 2014, and peaked at number one on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums.[4] The album received critical acclaim from critics and is a major influence on the broader sound in the EDM genre, allowing for more "softer" and "dreamer" sounds to be in the genre. He attempted to make a follow-up to his album and had high expectations on himself, but it resulted in writer's block and depression. He wrote about the way he felt during these times in his second studio album Nurture.[5]
He began producing music under the alias Virtual Self in 2017, and released a self-titled EP the same year.[6] The single "Ghost Voices" earned Robinson a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.[7]
His second studio album Nurture was released in 2021, and debuted at number one on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums. The album received critical acclaim and was said to be one of the best electronic albums of the year, and topped The Fader's list of the "50 Best Albums of 2021".[8]
His third studio album Smile! :D was released in 2024 and was supported by a world tour with 70 shows from 2024 to 2025.[9]
