Point Marsden is the easternmost point on Kangaroo Island that faces Investigator Strait. It marks the end of two coastlines: one coming from Cape Borda in the west and the other from Cape Rouge in the south near Nepean Bay. It is a rocky headland of medium height. About 0.5 nautical miles (0.93 kilometers) west of it, there is high land covered with trees. Point Marsden is the western edge of the entrance to Nepean Bay.
Formation, geology, and ocean
Point Marsden was formed about 7,500 years ago when sea levels rose at the start of the Holocene period.[1] The cliffs at Point Marsden are made of a type of metamorphic rock called Boxing Bay Formation, part of the Kangaroo Island Group.[2] The water near the cliffs is about 10 meters (33 feet) deep at the edge of the wave-cut platform.[3]
History
Aboriginal use: By 1999, no archaeological finds showed that Aboriginal people used the land right near Point Marsden.[4]
European discovery: Matthew Flinders found and named Point Marsden on March 21, 1802.[5]
Navigation aid: A small tower with a flashing light, 3 meters (9.8 feet) tall, was built in 1915.[6] The light is 85 meters (279 feet) above sea level and helps ships travel safely at night in Investigator Strait. People had suggested building a navigation light here as early as 1882. In 1912, when the Australian government took over navigation duties from South Australia, Point Marsden was one of four places chosen for new navigation aids.[7][8]
Farming
As of 2014, the land near Point Marsden is used for farming. Farming started there as early as 1908, and by 1945 most of the native plants had been cleared to make way for farms.[9][10]
