Pauline Esther Friedman Phillips (writing as Abigail Van Buren) (July 4, 1918 – January 16, 2013)[1] was an American advice columnist and radio show host who was known for her radio show Dear Abby during the 1950s.
Phillips was born on July 4, 1918 in Sioux City, Iowa. Her parents were Jewish-Russian immigrants. She studied at Morningside College. Her twin sister, Esther "Eppie" Pauline Friedman Lederer, was also a well-known advice columnist. She used the name Ann Landers.
Phillips was married to Morton Phillips from 1939 until her death in 2013. They had two children. She had Alzheimer's disease since 2002.[2] Phillips died on January 16, 2013 in Minneapolis, Minnesota from the disease, aged 94.[3]
