Panipat is an old city in Haryana area of India.[1] It is 90 kms north of Delhi and 130 kms south of Chandigarh.

Panipat is an old city in Haryana area of India.[1] It is 90 kms north of Delhi and 130 kms south of Chandigarh.

Three famous battles were fought here at different times in history: the First Battle of Panipat in 1526, the Second Battle of Panipat in 1556 and the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761.[2]

Today, Panipat is famous as 'The Town of Weavers' because of its fine carpet-weaving and textile industries[source?]. It was first captured by Mahmud of Ghazni of the Ghaznavid Empire in the year 1005 and later by the Ghurid dynasty. It was then under the Delhi Sultanate and then the Mughal Empire until the British conquered this area and colonized India.
