Osmyl is the name for a moiety found in some chemical compounds of the element osmium. Its systematic name is dioxoosmium(VI). The osmyl structure is found in most compounds where osmium has the +6 oxidation state.
It is often written as OsO2+2, but the simple osmyl cation has never been seen by chemists. Instead, osmyl compounds are coordination complexes where a central O=Os2+=O structure is stabilised by other ligands bonded to the osmium atom. These osmyl complexes normally have square bipyramidal molecular geometry.
Potassium osmate contains the anionic osmyl complex OsO2(OH)2−4. This anion has four hydroxide ligands that stabilise the osmyl.
When potassium osmate (or another OsO2(OH4)2− salt) reacts with an acid, the conjugate base can replace hydroxide as a ligand. While these compounds still contain an anionic complex, they are traditionally named like double salts: for example, potassium osmyl chloride (K2OsO2Cl4) or potassium osmyl oxalate (K2OsO2(C2O4)2).
The osmate complex also reacts with ammonium salts because of ammonium's Bronsted acidity. This makes the ammine complex OsO2(NH3)2+4, as seen in osmyl tetra-ammine chloride.
