Octopart is a search engine for electronic parts. Engineers use it to find and compare parts they need to build electronic products. The website shows prices, where to buy parts, and other information from many different sellers in one place.[1]

Octopart is owned by Altium Limited and is based in La Jolla, California, in the United States.

History

Octopart was started in 2007 by three physics graduate students named Andres Morey, Sam Wurzel, and Harish Agarwal.[2] After they left school, Morey and Wurzel joined a program called Y Combinator that helps new companies grow.[3]

In 2015, Altium Limited bought Octopart. Altium is a company that makes software for designing printed circuit boards.[4] After Altium bought it, Octopart kept its own name.

In 2024, a Japanese company called Renesas Electronics bought Altium. This means Renesas now owns Octopart too.[5]

How it works

Octopart is free for people who want to search for parts. The company makes money from sellers who pay to show their parts on the website.[6] People who use the website include engineers who design electronic products, people who buy parts for companies, and hobbyists who like to build their own electronics.[7]

Users can search for parts by name, number, or by what the part does. The website shows prices from different stores, how many are in stock, and how long it takes to get them. It also gives datasheets, which are papers that explain what each part does.[8] Octopart also has a BOM tool. A bill of materials is a list of all the parts needed to build something. Engineers can upload their list and the website helps them find each part and compare prices.[9]
