A no-AI sign

A no-AI label is a label used for some things not made using generative AI. Some use phrases, such as "human-made", "proudly human" and "AI-free". Some labels cost nothing to use, while some cost money.[1] They can be useful when people do not want products to be made using generative AI.

No-AI labels have been compared to labels for organic produce[2] or fair trade.[1] Some organisations want a unified standard to help consumers know what "AI free" means.[1] "Made by AI" labels also exist.[2]

Background

Merriam-Webster's word of the year in 2025 was "slop" (defined as low-quality content made using generative AI). AI-generated content was quickly becoming harder to detect at the time. Allison Morrow of CNN said that watching TikTok videos felt like taking an AI-or-not test.[3] Some companies have used AI in advertising.[4]

Examples

Since 2025, iHeartMedia has required their radio stations to say their content is "Guaranteed Human" during hourly announcements of the station's call sign (the Federal Communications Commission requires these announcements).[5] This is because they learned that 90% of their viewers want the media they consume to be made by humans.[3]

Authors Guild allows books to have a "Human Authored" certification and a logo showing it.[2][6] A UK startup named Books By People does a similar thing, but with an "Organic Literature" certification, which allows minor uses of AI, such as idea creation and formatting.[7]

Some films and TV series have messages, such as the 2024 film Heretic ("No generative AI was used in the making of this film"),[1] and the 2025-present series Pluribus ("This show was made by humans"), both in their closing credits.[4][8] In 2026, the music streaming platform Spotify launched "Verified by Spotify" badges, which are placed on profiles officially verified to not use AI.[9]
