Mikhail Aleksandrovich Sergachev (Russian: Михаил Александрович Сергачёв, romanized: Mihail Aleksandrovich Sergachyov; born 25 June 1998) is a Russian professional ice hockey defenceman. He currently plays for the Utah Mammoth of the National Hockey League (NHL) and serves as an alternate captain. He has also played for Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Sergachev is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, winning back-to-back with the Lightning in 2020 and 2021.

Career

Before playing in the NHL, Sergachev played two seasons with Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He had a successful time with the Spitfires and helped the team during the playoffs. The Spitfire hosted the Memorial Cup tournament which automatically earned them a spot. The Spitfires did well in the tournament, making it all the way to the finals where they defeated the Erie Otters 4-3 to win the Memorial Cup.[1] He won the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the OHL's most outstanding defenceman.[2] He was also named to the First All-Rookie Team and the First All-Star Team.[3]

He was drafted 9th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2016 NHL entry draft.[4] On 12 June 2021, Sergachev signed a three-year, $2.775 million entry-level contract to join the Canadiens.[5]

On 13 October 2016, Sergachev made his NHL debut in a 4–1 win against the Buffalo Sabres.[6] He played a total of four regular season games with the Canadiens.

On 15 June 2017, the Canadiens traded Sergachev along with a 2018 conditional second-round draft pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Jonathan Drouin and a 2018 conditional sixth-round draft pick.[7] On 6 October, he recorded his first NHL point after assisting on a Nikita Kucherov goal in a 5–3 win against the Florida Panthers.[8] On 19 October, Sergachev scored his first two NHL goals against Sergei Bobrovsky in a 2–0 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets.[9] On 13 January 2019, the league fined Sergachev $2,403.67 after he cross-checking Buffalo Sabres player Johan Larsson during a game.[10] He helped the Lightning when they went on a run in the playoffs. They defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets, Boston Bruins, and New York Islanders. They went on to defeat the Dallas Stars four games to two in the Final to win the Stanley Cup.[11] On 25 November 2020, Sergachev signed a three-year, $14.4 million contract to stay with the Lightning.[12] The Lightning went on to repeat as Stanley Cup champions the next season as well.[13] On 5 November 2021, the league suspended Sergachev for 2 regular season games and fined him $48,000 after he illegally checked Toronto Maple Leafs player Mitch Marner during a game.[14] On 13 November 2022, Sergachev set the record for most points by a Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman in franchise history where he scored two goals and recorded two assists.[15] On 21 December, he was fined $5,000 for slashing Maple Leafs player Michael Bunting.[16] On 13 January 2023, he was fined another $5,000 for roughing after an incident with Vancouver Canucks player Conor Garland.[17]

On 29 June 2024, the Lightning traded Sergachev to the Utah Hockey Club in exchange for Conor Geekie, J.J. Moser, a 2024 seventh-round draft pick, and a 2025 second-round draft pick.[18] The team later changed their name to the Utah Mammoth.
