Michael Goldade (born 1981) is an American traditionalist Catholic bishop. He is a member of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX). He was excommunicated (excluded) from the Catholic Church after he became a bishop without the permission of the pope.[1][2]

Early life

Michael Goldade was born in 1981 in Williston, North Dakota. He grew up in St. Marys, Kansas. He comes from a large Catholic family with ten children. Three of his sisters are traditionalist nuns.[3]

He studied at the traditionalist seminary in Winona, Minnesota. In 2004, he was ordained as a priest for the SSPX.[3][4][5]

Career

After his ordination, Goldade did pastoral work in Armada, Michigan. In 2009, he became the director of a retreat house in Ridgefield, Connecticut. From 2014 to 2023, he was a prior in Kansas City, Missouri. He led a large church community for the SSPX. In 2021, he also became the assistant to the district superior.[3][4]

In 2023, he became the rector (head) of the St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary in Dillwyn, Virginia.[3][4]

Bishop

On 26 May 2026, the SSPX announced that Goldade was chosen to become a bishop.[3][4] Pope Leo XIV did not agree to this choice. The Pope asked the SSPX not to consecrate him.[6][2]

On 1 July 2026, Goldade was consecrated (officially made a bishop in a religious ceremony) as a bishop in Écône, Switzerland. The main bishop who consecrated him was Alfonso de Galarreta. Bishop Bernard Fellay also helped to consecrate him.[5][7]

Because he was consecrated without a papal mandate, Goldade was automatically excommunicated.[8][1][2][9] The SSPX does not agree with this excommunication.[7]
