Mauser M 98

The Mauser M 98 is a bolt-action rifle from Germany. The production of the military version stopped at the end of World War II in 1945, and the new Mauser M 98 and M 98 Magnum rifles are made for civilians. They have been produced in the city of Isny im Allgäu in Germany by Mauser Jagdwaffen GmbH,^[2] which is part of SIG Sauer.

The modern Mauser M 98 is mostly a civilian version of the Karabiner 98k, which was one of the last updates to the the long line of Mauser 98 military rifles that started during World War I. Like the Kar98k, but more modern, the M 98 comes in many types for hunting.

The M 98 system has a receiver that covers its parts and a bolt group. The bolt has three locking lugs: two main lugs at the front, with one having a slot, and a third safety lug at the back. This safety lug is a new feature compared to older Mauser designs. The two main lugs lock with a surface area of 56 mm², while the safety lug does not usually lock to prevent uneven forces. The receiver is also bigger for better strength and safety. The bolt handle is fixed to the bolt and is turned down to work with optical sights.

Another important part of the M 98 system is the controlled round feed. It has a large claw extractor that grabs the cartridge as it leaves the magazine and holds it until it is ejected by the ejector inside the receiver. A slight pull back of the bolt at the end of the opening cycle helps in removing the cartridge case. The M 98 works well no matter how the rifle is held, whether the cartridge has been fired or not. If the bolt is not pulled back far enough, the cartridge may not be ejected properly and could get stuck.

The bolt also has a firing pin mechanism that is cocked when the bolt is opened. A part of the bolt shows when it is cocked. This is a new feature that helps reduce the travel and time of the firing pin.

The action has large holes for gas escape and a gas shield on the bolt to protect the user's head if there is a problem with the cartridge. If there is a major failure, it is designed to keep debris away from the operator's face.

The Mauser M 98 bolt can be easily taken out of the receiver by pulling out the bolt stop on the left side and then rotating and pulling out the bolt.

The usual barrel length for the M 98 is 600 mm (23.62 in) and for the M 98 Magnum, it is 620 mm (24.41 in). You can ask for different barrel lengths for both models. You can also order the rifles with a barrel that has a quarter rib, sight base, and a sling swivel.

The iron sights are set for 50, 100 and 150 meters. There is also a Rigby-style diopter sight available. The rifle comes with mounts that let you easily remove the telescopic sight.

The rifle comes with a walnut wood stock that has a hand-rubbed oil finish. It comes with a cheekpiece, a rubber pad for recoil, and a cap for the pistol grip.

The standard M 98 is comes in these sizes: 7×57mm Mauser, .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, 8×57 IS, and 9.3×62mm.

The Mauser M 98 Magnum is a faster version made for safari hunting, where it is very important for the gun to work well in tough conditions.^[3]

It can use .375 Holland & Holland Magnum, .416 Rigby, and .450 Rigby bullets, and it has box magazines for loading the bullets.^[4]
