Matthew James Kessel (born June 23, 2000) is an American professional ice hockey defenseman. He currently plays for the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Career

Before playing in the NHL, Kessel played one season with the Fargo Force, one season with the Chicago Steel, and one season with the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League (USHL), as well as, three years with the UMass Minutemen of Hockey East.

He was drafted 150th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2020 NHL entry draft. On March 27, 2022, Kessel signed a three-year entry-level contract to join the Blues.[1] He was sent down to play for their AHL-affiliate Springfield Thunderbirds.

On April 2, 2023, the Blues called him up and Kessel made his NHL debut in a 4–3 shootout loss against the Boston Bruins.[2] On February 13, 2024, he recorded his first NHL point after assisting on a Alexey Toropchenko goal in a 4–1 loss against the Toronto Maple Leafs.[3] On March 13, 2024, Kessel signed a two-year contract to stay with the Blues.[4]
