Luke Schenn (born November 2, 1989) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. He currently plays for the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also played for the New York Rangers.

Schenn is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, winning back-to-back with the Lightning in 2020 and 2021.

Career

Before playing in the NHL, Schenn played three seasons with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He had a successful time with his teams. He was named the Kelowna Rockets Rookie of the Year after finishing his rookie season scoring 3 goals and recording 8 assists for 11 points.[1] He was also named a West Second Team All-Star.[2]

He was drafted 5th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2008 NHL entry draft.[3] On October 7, 2008, Schenn signed a three-year, $1.25 million entry-level contract to join the Leafs.[4]

On February 9, 2018, Schenn made his NHL debut in a 3–2 win against the Detroit Red Wings.[5] On February 13, he recorded his first NHL point, assisting on a Matt Stajan goal in a 6–5 shootout win against the New Jersey Devils.[6] On February 7, 2009, Schenn scored his first NHL goal against Carey Price in a 5–2 win against the Montreal Canadiens.[7] On September 16, 2011, Schenn signed a five-year, $18 million contract to stay with the Leafs.[8]

On June 23, 2012, the Leafs traded Schenn to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for James van Riemsdyk.[9] With the trade, Luke was able to play alongside his younger brother Brayden who was also playing for the Flyers at the time. Schenn played four seasons with the Flyers.

On January 6, 2016, the Flyers traded Schenn along with Vincent Lecavalier to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Jordan Weal and a 2016 third-round draft pick.[10] He scored 2 goals and recorded 9 assists for 11 points in 43 regular season games.

On July 23, 2016, Schenn signed a two-year, $2.5 million contract to join the Arizona Coyotes.[11] He played two seasons with the Coyotes.

On July 2, 2018, Schenn signed a one-year, $800,000 contract to join the Anaheim Ducks.[12] He played 8 regular season games before being sent down to play for their AHL-affiliate San Diego Gulls.

On January 16, 2019, the Ducks traded Schenn along with a 2020 seventh-round draft pick to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Michael Del Zotto.[13] He played 18 regular season games with the Canucks and recorded 2 assists.

On July 1, 2019, Schenn signed a one-year, $700,000 contract to join the Tampa Bay Lightning.[14] He was a healthy scratch and was with the team when they won the Stanley Cup that year. On October 9, 2020, Schenn signed a one-year, $800,000 contract to stay with the Lightning.[15] He was with the team when they won another Stanley Cup that year as well.[16]

On July 28, 2021, Schenn signed a two-year, $1.7 million contract to return to the Vancouver Canucks.[17] He played two seasons in his return to the Canucks.

On March 1, 2023, the Canucks traded Schenn back to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a 2023 third-round draft pick.[18] In his return to the Leafs, he scored 1 goal in 15 regular season games and recorded 1 assist in 11 playoff games.

On July 1, 2023, Schenn signed a three-year, $8.25 million contract to join the Nashville Predators.[19] On October 17, 2024, Schenn played in his 1,000 career NHL game in a 4–2 loss against the Edmonton Oilers.[20]

On March 5, 2025, the Predators traded Schenn along with Tommy Novak to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Michael Bunting and a 2026 fourth-round draft pick.[21] He never played a game for the Penguins. Two days later on March 7, the Penguins traded Schenn to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for a 2026 second-round draft pick and a 2027 fourth-round draft pick.[22] He played parts of two seasons with the Jets.

On March 5, 2026, the Jets traded Schenn along with Logan Stanley to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Jacob Bryson, Isak Rosen, a 2026 conditional fourth-round draft pick, and a 2027 second-round draft pick.[23]

Personal life

Schenn's younger brother Brayden is also a professional hockey player for the New York Islanders.[24]
