Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG, or simply Lidl, is a German food retail company.
Lidl is an international enterprise with independent national companies almost everywhere in Europe. The company owns more than 10,000 stores. 3,000 of these stores are in Germany alone, making Germany Lidl's biggest national market.[2][3]
The Lidl & Schwarz Grocery Wholesale company was founded in Germany in the 1930s.[4] The first Lidl stores were opened in 1973,[5][6] in the 1990s Lidl started opening stores outside Germany and today Lidl stores can be found in nearly every country in Europe.[7] Lidl started its foreign expansion with entering France in 1988. The first store in the United Kingdom (UK) was opened in 1994. Nowadays, there are more than 380 stores in the UK. Lidl supermarkets and Kaufland hypermarkets are part of the Schwarz Group which is one of the largest grocery retailers in Europe, which is based in Neckarsulm, Germany.
When Lidl was firstly opened in Serbia, on 11. October 2018 there was a massive interest in it. Local townsfolks and old men and women managed to ,, capture " all meat from the store in 7 minutes. One person, who was there at the moment said:
,, Dana 11. oktobra 2018. godine, u ranim jutarnjim časovima, došlo je do masovnog proboja zaštitnih ograda ispred objekata... Svedoci navode da su korišćene napredne taktike blokade kolicima, kao i verbalni sukobi visokog intenziteta. Najžešće borbe zabeležene su u sektoru svežeg mesa, gde je zabeleženo takozvano 'otimanje iz ruku'...”
English ( translation ):
,, On October 11, 2018, in the early morning hours, a mass breach of the protective barriers in front of the premises took place... Witnesses report the use of advanced trolley-based blockade tactics, as well as high-intensity verbal confrontations. The fiercest clashes were recorded in the fresh meat section, where a so-called "snatching from hands" incident occurred..."
On the internet, there can be found videos of old townsfolk making an incident over cheap chicken's meat which was worth around an euro ( or 116 Serbian dinars ) at that time. This was gold for meme culture since they made edits of the video, and actually used an edited photo of Battle of Kosovo Field in 1389 ( from a Serbian painter and artist, Uroš Predić ) with edited background of Lidl markets with many funny parols in native Serbian under the name ,, Bitka za Lidl " ( English: ,, Battle for Lidl " )
