History

The area is the traditional land of the Kwini people. In 1908, a Catholic mission was started in the area. It was called the Drysdale River Mission. In 1937, the mission moved to the current site and was called Kalumburu. The name comes from an Aboriginal word that means "a place of plums."

During World War II, a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base was built near the mission. Japanese planes attacked the base and the mission in 1943.

Geography

Kalumburu is in a tropical part of Western Australia. It has a wet season and a dry season. The community is only able to be reached by road during the dry season. The road is often closed in the wet season because of flooding.

The community is near the coast, and it has some beautiful beaches. It is also close to the Kalumburu National Park.

Demographics

Most of the people who live in Kalumburu are Aboriginal people. They are mostly from the Kwini, Kulari, Miwa, and Walmbi language groups. The community has a school, a store, and a health clinic.
