Juan R. Torruella

Juan Rafael Torruella del Valle Sr. (June 7, 1933 – October 26, 2020) was an American politician, lawyer and Olympic sailor. He was a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit from 1984 until his death.^[1] He was chief judge of that court from 1994 to 2001. He was the first and, to date, only Hispanic to serve on the First Circuit.

He was, from 1974 to 1984 on the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. He was also a former competitive sailor, competing for the Puerto Rican team at the Summer Olympic Games in 1964, 1968, 1972, and 1976.^[2]

Torruella was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He died on October 26, 2020 in Boston, Massachusetts at the age of 87.^[3]
