Josephine Matthews (born 15 November 1906) was a British track and field athlete during the 1920s and 1930s, the early era of women's athletics. She was specialized in the long jump. Matthews was a member of the British team at the 1926 Women's World Games.^[1]

Career

In 1926 she won the silver medal at the WAAA championships in the long jump behind Phyllis Green, with a distance of 4.93 meters.^[2] At the WAAA championships in 1928 she jumped 5.15 meters and finished third behind Muriel Gunn who jumped a national record and Japanese Kinue Hitomi. The next year she finished with a jump of 5.19 meters again second behind Gunn. Her last medal at the WAAA championships was in 1933 where she finished third in the long jump behind Phyllis Bartholomew and Nellie Carrington with a distance of 5.36 meters.^[2]

After the 1926 Great Britain Women's World Games trials Matthews was selected to represent the United Kingdom in the long jump at the 1926 Women's World Games, the second Women's World Games in Gothenburg.^[3][4] She also competed at the 1929 Germany–Great Britain women's athletics match.
