Ian Douglas Cole (born February 21, 1989) is an American professional ice hockey defenseman. He currently plays for the Utah Mammoth of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also played for the St. Louis Blues, Pittsburgh Penguins, Columbus Blue Jackets, Colorado Avalanche, Minnesota Wild, Carolina Hurricanes, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Vancouver Canucks.
Cole is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, winning back-to-back with the Penguins in 2016 and 2017.
Before playing in the NHL, Cole played three years with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). He had a successful time with Notre Dame. He was named to the All-CCHA First Team, CCHA All-Tournament Team and was named a AHCA West First-Team All-American.[1][2]
He was drafted 18th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2007 NHL entry draft. On March 22, 2010, Cole signed a contract to join the Blues.[3] He was sent down to play for their AHL-affiliate Peoria Rivermen.
On November 6, 2010, Cole made his NHL debut in a 2–1 shootout win against the Boston Bruins.[4] On December 13, 2014, Cole scored his first NHL goal against Mathieu Garon and also recorded an assist on a Chris Stewart goal in a 4–3 overtime win against the Columbus Blue Jackets.[5] On May 28, 2013, Cole signed a two-year, $1.65 million contract to stay with the Blues.[6]
On March 2, 2015, the Blues traded Cole to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Robert Bortuzzo and a 2016 seventh=round draft pick.[7] On June 29, 2015, Cole signed a three-year, $6.3 million contract to stay with the Penguins.[8] He helped the Penguins when they went on a run in the playoffs. They defeated the New York Rangers, Washington Capitals, and Tampa Bay Lightning. They went on to defeat the San Jose Sharks four games to two in the Final to win the Stanley Cup.[9] He helped the Penguins repeat as Stanley Cup champions the next season as the defeated the Nashville Predators four games to two in the Final.[10]
On February 23, 2018, the Penguins traded Cole along with Filip Gustavsson, and a 2018 first-round draft pick to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Vincent Dunn and a 2018 third-round draft pick.[11] He never played a game for the Senators. Three days later on February 26, the Senators traded Cole to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Nick Moutrey and a 2020 third-round draft pick.[12] He scored 2 goals and recorded 5 assists in 20 regular season games for the Jackets.
On July 1, 2018, Cole signed a three-year, $12.75 million contract to join the Colorado Avalanche.[13] He played parts of three seasons with the Avalanche.
On January 19, 2021, the Avalanche traded Cole to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Greg Pateryn.[14] He scored 1 goal and recorded 7 assists in 52 regular season games for the Wild.
On July 28, 2021, Cole signed a one-year, $2.9 million contract to join the Carolina Hurricanes.[15] He scored 2 goals and recorded 17 assists in 75 regular season games for the Hurricanes.
On July 13, 2022, Cole signed a one-year, $3 million contract to join the Tampa Bay Lightning.[16] On October 10, the Lightning announced that they had suspended Cole with pay after allegations of sexual abuse were made against him.[17] He denied the allegations. An investigation by both the Lightning and the NHL found no wrongdoing.[18] On February 10, 2023, Cole was fined $5,000 for kneeing Colorado Avalanche player Andrew Cogliano during a game.[19] He scored 3 goals and recorded 14 assists in 78 regular season games for the Lightning.
On July 1, 2023, Cole signed a one-year, $3 million contract to join the Vancouver Canucks.[20] He scored 2 goals and recorded 9 assists in 78 regular season games for the Canucks.
On July 1, 2024, Cole signed a one-year, $3 million contract to join the Utah Hockey Club.[21] He remained with the team as they changed their name to the Utah Mammoth.
