The hybrid system, now one of the best-selling types of powertrains, is made up like this: it uses an internal combustion engine (gasoline or diesel) and an electric one (often paired with a lithium-ion battery), so you can save on fuel and emissions[1].
Types
There are various types of hybrid
- Mild Hybrid (MHEV): It doesn't move the car on its own, but it's useful for short distances (from 0 to 4 km/h).
- Full Hybrid (HEV): This system lets you do short trips (about 1/2 km) and you can't recharge it at a charging station, because it recharges automatically.
- Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV): It has bigger batteries and can go about 10 km, and it charges through regenerative braking or at its charging stations.
The car consumes much less, has lower emissions, and offers a smoother drive[2].
Story
The invention started with Toyota, when they produced the Prius in 1997, and then it gradually became more and more famous.
