Holguín Province is one of the eastern provinces of Cuba. Its capital is the city of Holguín, which also serves as the main administrative, economic, and cultural center of the province.
Holguín is located in the northeastern part of the island and has a varied geography that includes coastal zones along the Atlantic Ocean, agricultural plains, and mountainous areas inland.
The province is known for a mix of urban development and rural landscapes, with agriculture, livestock, mining, and tourism playing important roles in its economy. Coastal areas such as Guardalavaca are among the better-known tourist destinations, valued for their beaches and coral reefs. Inland, the province includes smaller towns and municipalities that are connected to farming and local industry, contributing to its overall economic diversity.
Holguín Province was formally established in its modern administrative form in the 1970s as part of a national reorganization of Cuba’s provincial divisions. Before that, the region was part of the larger historic province of Oriente, which covered much of eastern Cuba. This restructuring created several smaller provinces, including Holguín, to improve administrative management and local governance.
Today, Holguín is divided into multiple municipalities, with the city of Holguín acting as the central hub for government services, education, healthcare, and commerce. While it is not the largest province in Cuba by area, it is one of the more populous and economically active eastern provinces.
