Halime Hatun (Ottoman Turkish: حلیمه خاتون) was a woman who lived in the 13th century. According to Turkish stories and old legends, she was the wife of Ertuğrul. Ertuğrul was the brave leader of the Kayi tribe of Oghuz Turks. She is also famous in history as the possible mother of Osman I. Osman I was the great leader who created the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire later became one of the biggest and most powerful empires in world history, ruling parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa for hundreds of years.[1]

Historical evidence and debates

Because she lived a very long time ago, it is hard to know all the true facts about her life. Many historians (people who study history) have different ideas about Halime Hatun. The problem is that the early Ottoman people were nomads. Nomads are people who travel from place to place and do not stay in one city. Because they were always moving, they did not write down their history in books. Instead, they told stories around the fire. These stories were passed down from parents to children for many years. The first written history books about the Ottoman Empire were written more than one hundred years after Osman I died. This makes it very difficult to know exactly what is a true fact and what is just an old legend.[2]

There is a grave with the name "Halime Hatun" written on it. This grave is located in the courtyard of Ertuğrul's tomb in the town of Söğüt, Turkey. Söğüt is a very important town because it was the first capital of the Ottoman state.[3] However, many modern historians think there might be a mistake about this grave. For example, a historian named Turgut Güler believes that Ertuğrul's real wife and Osman's true mother was a woman named "Hayme Ana". Hayme Ana has her own tomb in the Domaniç district of Kütahya.[4]

In the late 19th century, a famous Ottoman ruler named Sultan Abdul Hamid II (who ruled from 1876 to 1909) wanted to fix and rebuild the old tombs of his ancestors. He repaired the tomb of Ertuğrul in Söğüt. At the same time, he also rebuilt the tomb of Hayme Ana. Because of this rebuilding work, some historians think the grave in Söğüt with the name Halime Hatun might actually belong to a different person from the Kayi tribe. They think the name was added to the grave much later.[5]

Even though historians are not completely sure about her real life, Halime Hatun is very famous today because of television. She is a main character in a very popular Turkish historical drama television show called Diriliş: Ertuğrul (which means Resurrection: Ertuğrul in English).

This television series tells the story of the Kayi tribe and how the Ottoman Empire began. It has been watched by millions of people all over the world, especially in Asia and the Middle East. In this show, the character of Halime Hatun is played by a famous Turkish actress named Esra Bilgiç.[6] Because of this television show, many people around the world now know the name Halime Hatun and have become interested in learning about early Ottoman history.
