In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as an auxiliary bishop of Kraków. He was consecrated by Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz. In 2017, Pope Francis appointed him as the Archbishop of Łódź, succeeding Marek Jędraszewski.[1][2]
On July 9, 2023, Pope Francis announced that Grzegorz Ryś would be made a cardinal. He will be given the titular church of Saints Cyril and Methodius.[1][4]
