Genchū

Genchū (元中) was a Japanese era name (年号, nengō, lit. year name) of the Southern Court during the Nanboku-chō period after Kōwa. This was the last Southern Court era. This period started in April 1384 and ended in October 1392.[1] During this time, the monarch in Yoshino until 1392 was Emperor Go-Kameyama (後亀山天皇, Go-Kameyama-tennō)..[2] Until 1392, the pretender in Kyoto was Emperor Go-Komatsu (後小松天皇, Go-Komatsu-tennō)[3] After 1392, Go-Komatsu was the 100th emperor of Japan, according to the traditional order of succession.

Events of the Genchū Era

  • 1391 (Genchū 8): Yamana Ujikyo attacked Kyoto.[4]
  • 1392 (Genchū 9), also known as Meitoku 3: Northern and Southern courts were reunited under Go-Komatsu.[4]
