Chemical structure of gallic acid

Gallic acid is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H2(OH)3COOH or C7O5H6. The systematic name of gallic acid is 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid. Salts and esters of gallic acid are called gallates. It has no relation to gallium.

Name

Gallic acid is named after plant galls, which contain gallic acid and tannins, which also often contain gallic acid and its esters.[1]

"Gallic acid" would be the systematic name of gallium(III) hydroxide, if it were treated as an oxoacid of gallium. Like its structural analog aluminium hydroxide ("aluminic acid"), this compound is amphoteric and is usually named as a metal hydroxide rather than an oxoacid. Salts of the Ga(OH)4 anion are also called "gallates".[2]
